What moves teeth whitening cost?

The price of whitening moves mostly with the method: whitening in the chair costs more than custom trays you use at home, which cost more than store products. An exam first, the number of sessions, and any crowns or fillings that will not whiten and may need replacing to match also change the total.

Whitening prices look all over the place because people compare different things: a box from the pharmacy, trays made by a dentist, and a session in the chair. Once you know which one you are pricing, the numbers make much more sense. Our current prices for each option are on our services page.

What are the ways to whiten teeth?

There are three main ways, and they differ in speed, supervision and price.

MethodHow long it tends to takeWho supervisesWhat drives the price
In the chairOften one visitThe dentist, in personChair time, the product, any protection for gums
Custom take home traysAbout a week of useThe dentist, by check inMaking the trays, the gel refills
Store productsOften longer than traysNobodyThe product alone

The American Dental Association notes that store products may take much longer than the other two options to reach a similar shade [1]. That is why they cost less up front; you are paying with time instead.

Why does the exam come first?

Because some stains do not respond to bleaching, and some teeth need treatment before whitening is safe.

The ADA says a clinical exam before whitening, with X-rays and other tests where they fit, helps find what is causing the discoloration [1]. A dark tooth after an old injury, a cavity, or worn enamel can each change the plan. The exam is often part of the price, or a separate fee, so ask which.

Why do crowns and fillings change the cost?

Because only natural teeth whiten, so older tooth colored work can look darker afterward.

The ADA is direct about this: tooth colored crowns, veneers and fillings do not change color with bleaching [1]. If you have them on your front teeth, the dentist may suggest replacing them after whitening so everything matches. That replacement is usually the largest hidden cost, and a good practice tells you about it before you start.

What about sensitivity?

Short term sensitivity is common, and caring for it can add a little to the total.

Temporary tooth sensitivity and sore gums are the most common side effects the ADA lists [1]. A dentist may adjust the gel strength, space out sessions, or suggest a desensitizing product. Ask what is included if your teeth are already sensitive.

How long does the result last?

It fades over time, and how fast depends on what you eat, drink and smoke.

Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco bring stains back sooner. Many people use touch up gel in their trays now and then, which is why trays can be good value over a few years. Nobody can promise a shade or how long it will hold, and you should be wary of anyone who does.

How do I compare quotes?

Ask each practice what the price includes: the exam, the number of sessions, trays, refills and follow up.

A lower headline price that leaves out the exam or the trays is not lower in the end. If you are still looking for a practice, how to choose a dentist you will actually keep helps, and a regular cleaning first often removes surface stain by itself, as how often should I get a dental cleaning explains. Check hours and map to see when you could come in.

This page is general information, not dental advice. Ask a licensed dentist whether whitening suits your teeth.

Is whitening safe for sensitive teeth?

Usually, with care. The dentist checks for cavities and worn enamel first, then suggests a gentler strength or shorter sessions. Some sensitivity during a course of whitening is common and fades once it ends.

How long does whitening last?

It fades slowly, faster with coffee, tea, red wine or smoking. Regular cleanings keep the result longer, and a short top-up at home brings the shade back when you want it.
